Understanding the overlap of symptoms between oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and obsessivecompulsive disorder (OCD) experienced by youth is pertinent for accurate diagnosis. A quantitative, retrospective, cross-sectional design format was used to assess the relationship between ODD and OCD in addition to evaluating the difference in ODD severity and symptoms based on OCD severity. Symptoms and severity ratings of ODD and OCD were collected from youth diagnosed with ODD (N = 179). Fisher's exact test and a Wilcoxon signed-rank test were performed. There were significant relationships between frustration related to obsessions and compulsions and the ODD symptoms of annoyance and anger. Results suggested that OCD severity predicted an increase in scores for ODD severity and symptoms.

Sense of coherence (SOC) is a relevant contributor and predictor of the individuals' mental and physical health. There are a number of studies about SOC, but only two validation articles of the sense of coherence scale (SOCS) were found on adolescents and none on children. The aim of this research was to validate the SOC scale in youth under 18. We hypothesized that younger children and children without psychiatric problems will have higher SOC than older ones, and children with psychiatric symptoms. We also wanted to examine the factor structure of both the 13 and the 29 item versions of the scale to study which is more valid in child and adolescent population. 199 children and 198 adolescents were included in the study; the mean age was 14.3 (SD 2.1) years. The sample included average youth from schools and youth under psychiatric treatment. Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) and Inventory of Life Quality (ILK) were used for validation of the SOCS. SOCS-13 was applied to compare SOC of children and adolescents. Children had higher SOC than adolescents in both samples. Males had higher SOC than females in children but not in adolescents. To date, research on traumatic stress and treatment-seeking behavior has primarily focused on Western populations. Despite experiencing similar levels of symptomatology, mental health service utilization appears lower among East Asian populations. Stigma toward mental health services may be one barrier to treatment-seeking, especially among individuals who have experienced potentially traumatic events; however, previous research has been primarily conducted in the United States. Less is known about predictors of treatment-seeking attitudes among populations residing in East Asia, particularly college students. The present study examined the relationship between trauma, mental health services stigma, and treatment-seeking attitudes among undergraduate students in Southwestern China. Self-report measures of trauma exposure, posttraumatic stress disorder symptomatology, mental health services stigma, and treatment-seeking attitudes were administered. We hypothesized that students with greater severity of traumatic symptoms would endorse more positive attitudes toward treatment-seeking if they reported lower levels of mental health services stigma. Mental health services stigma was a strong predictor of negative attitudes toward treatment-seeking, whereas neither trauma exposure nor traumatic symptomatology were associated with treatment-seeking attitudes. The significant association between mental health services stigma and treatment-seeking attitudes underscores the importance of destigmatizing mental health to encourage treatment-seeking among the Chinese college student population.

The acceptability to, and feasibility of, guidance counsellors using YouthCHAT to screen New Zealand secondary school students for mental health issues and risky health behaviours was investigated. Participants were eight guidance counsellors using YouthCHAT in two schools. Over eight months, School A implemented a systematic school-wide screening programme, screening 43% of their student body, whereas School B adopted an opportunistic screening approach, screening <1%. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with guidance counsellors, and data were analysed using a general inductive approach. All participants reported YouthCHAT an acceptable tool; however, while it was well used in School A, usage rates were low in School B. With a structured protocol for screening in place, the use of YouthCHAT by guidance counsellors shows promise.

This manuscript offers an approach to secure needed SBMHS for students with disabilities through unique applications within the IEP development process, informed by an analysis of recent case law. We will discuss six components of this approach. First, the need for SBMHS must be established through evaluation data. Data sources to confirm the need for services include record review, interview, observation, and testing. Second, the evaluation data must be presented in the Present Level of Academic Achievement and Functional Performance (PLAAFP) section of the IEP. This section will also describe how a child's educational performance is adversely affected by mental health issues. Third, annual goals must be developed for areas adversely affected by a child's mental health status. The goals must be measurable and include performance targets established by criteria and matched to the baseline data and skills targets for intervention. Fourth, the specially-designed instruction (SDI) and related service intervention (RSI) must be planned for each goal area. The SDI must specify the methodology and strategies to be provided to address the child's mental health needs. The RSI must explicitly describe the nature of the strategies or approaches planned. Fifth, progress monitoring plans must be described, including the metrics matched to baseline data and the goal, a timetable, and reporting options. Sixth, and importantly, the IEP SBMHS must be implemented as planned and revised if progress toward the goals is not satisfactory. One unique contribution of this IEP approach to securing needed SBMHS is the integration of recent case law to illustrate how courts relied on specification of the six components in confirming the need for SMBHS. A second contribution is providing specific examples of IEP statements for the six components when mental health needs must be addressed.

Camouflaging is hypothesized to play an important role in developing mental health difficulties. But this might not be true for everyone. It remains unclear for whom camouflaging is associated with mental health. In this preregistered study (AsPredicted #45095), we investigated whether (1) camouflaging and mental health were associated and (2) we could detect subgroups with a different association between camouflaging and mental health. For this study, 352 autistic adults aged 30-84 years filled in, among others, the Dutch Camouflaging Autistic Traits Questionnaire to measure camouflaging and the Symptom Checklist-90 Revised to measure mental health difficulties. We found a moderate correlation between camouflaging and mental health difficulties (r = 0.45). However, there was only a strong association between camouflaging and mental health in a small subgroup, while the association was small in most autistic adults. For varying levels of negative affect and (to a lesser extent) autism traits, the association between camouflaging and mental health differed, but not for biological sex, age, or educational level. Thus, while one should be careful with group-based conclusions regarding the (negative) impact of camouflaging, camouflaging can be important to consider in clinical practice, especially for people with a substantial level of negative affect.

This study examined the spoken language, written language, and executive functions of 19 female adolescents with high risk factors in a long-term, holistic program. Standardized assessment results revealed that 63.2% of the participants had below-average spoken language, 68.5% had below-average written language, and 68.4% and 42.1% had some level of elevated executive functioning challenges (as reported by themselves and by the program staff, respectively). However, these profiles did not match their current disabilities: none had a speech/language impairment, 26.3% had a learning disability, and 78.9% had emotional/behavioral disorder. Additionally, there were stark differences in the number of disabilities and assessment scores between participants involved with the juvenile justice system and those who were not. Participants involved with the justice system had the greatest challenges in all areas. This and other findings from the study are described and discussed.

Job instability is high among autistic adults, with employer-initiated terminations a common reason for job loss. The current study used qualitative methods to code reasons that autistic adults identified for their employer-initiated termination. From 315 autistic individuals ages 18-35 who completed an online survey, 93 (29.5%) reported having been terminated from a job. These individuals were asked about the reasons for their termination and responses were coded into thematic categories. Common reasons included work performance, social difficulties, attendance, and mental health challenges. Adults were more likely to attribute terminations to internal causes (related to the individual) than to external causes (environment-related). A good fit between workplace, individual preferences, skills, and abilities is likely key to promoting job continuity for autistic adults.

This article offers recommendations for online graduate students, instructors, and universities to better meet the needs of students with disabilities who increasingly participate in online courses. Using semi-structured interviews, researchers asked what recommendations participants from respective disability categories have for supporting them in their pursuit of a graduate education in an online environment. Thirteen graduate participants represented five disability classifications including learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder/attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, psychological disorders, chronic health impairments, or visual impairments. Interview transcripts were analyzed to identify disability-specific recommendations through constant comparison of individual data sets. Recommendations for students, instructors, and universities focused on instructor-student communication and relationships, online course design, and a changing and active role of institutional support services. The collaborative efforts of all are emphasized.

By virtue of their teaching role and contact with students, health professions (HP) educators are often the first point of connection for students who are experiencing mental health difficulties. Educators are increasingly expected to include some form of pastoral care in their role. Mental health-related interactions with students may have a negative emotional impact on educators, particularly when roles and expectations are not clearly defined and where boundaries are not managed effectively. Using positioning theory as a lens, this study explored how educators experienced such interactions and how this manifested in positions, storylines, and speech acts. Interviews were conducted with 27 HP educators at a faculty of medicine and health sciences. Reflexive thematic analysis using inductive coding identified themes corresponding to the nearing, weighted, ambivalent, and distancing positions participants adopted in relation to students with mental health difficulties. There was fluidity in and between positions, and more than one position could be occupied simultaneously; participants each moved through different positions in response to different relational situations. Multiple storylines informed these positions, representing how moral- and care-informed responsibility intersected with responsiveness to make certain actions possible or impossible. Normative and personal value narratives were evident in storylines, in many cases underscored by care or justice ethics. The value of positioning theory in facilitating reflective faculty development initiatives for educators engaged in these interactions is discussed.

It is unclear how well intentions to support an adolescent peer with a mental health problem or in crisis translate into actual help-giving behaviours. Using data from a longitudinal study, this analysis aimed to investigate the associations between mental health first aid intentions and supportive behaviours among adolescents. A sample of 2749 Australian adolescents were included in the baseline analyses of 12 intention items and other covariates. At 12- and 18-month follow-up, 733 and 520 students reported valid data on their help-giving behaviours. Linear and logistic regression models were employed to examine the associations. High-to-moderate concordance was observed between baseline first aid intentions and the corresponding helping behaviours during follow-up assessments, with exceptions in items related to seeking help from adults/professionals or suicide. The overall quality of first aid intentions at baseline was significantly associated with that of helping behaviours at 12-month follow-up, after adjusting for potential confounders. Eleven of the 12 measured intentions prospectively predicted corresponding actions at 12 months, and in seven of them such predictive effect remained significant up to 18 months after training delivery. These findings suggest that adolescents' first aid intentions can predict their helping behaviours, thus supporting the notion that training programmes that improve adolescents' first aid intentions have the potential to translate into actual actions. Future research is warranted to narrow the gap between certain intentions and behaviours, particularly those related to seeking help from adults/professionals and suicide.

To help guide school mental health policy and practice, we evaluated patterns of mental health help-seeking across lifetime adversity among sixth-grade adolescents. An ethnically/socioeconomically diverse sample of sixth-graders (N = 751) self-completed assessments of help-seeking and indicators of lifetime adversities: violence victimization, poverty, parent loss/divorce, mental illness/substance abuse at home, and stressors related to social identity. Logistic regression models adjusting for family/personal factors examined adversity factors on help-seeking outcomes overall and across subgroups with mental health perceived problems and high-symptoms. Overall, odds increased between perceived problem and formal service use, poverty and formal service/school counselor use, and high-symptoms/victimization and talking to a friend (p < 0.05). Among those with perceived problems, odds increased between mental illness/substance abuse at home and formal service use, victimization and talking to a friend, and poverty and school counselor use (p < 0.05). Among those with no mental health problems, odds increased between victimization and formal service/school counselor use, and poverty and formal service use (p < 0.05). No significant patterns were observed in the high-symptom subgroup. Understanding how adversity shapes help-seeking can help guide school mental health policies and practices. Study findings point to areas for expansion of supports for students with adversity to create a mental health safety net and help mitigate future risk.

Introduction: Emotional and behavioral problems are common in adolescents with mild to borderline intellectual disabilities (MBID). Basic Psychological Needs Theory connects fulfillment of basic psychological needs (autonomy, relatedness, competence) to ill-being (mental health problems). The associations between the frustration and satisfaction of basic psychological needs and indicators of mental health problems are the subject of this study. Method: Adolescents with MBID (N = 324, mean age 15.2 years), filled out questionnaires on basic psychological needs (BPNSFS-ID) and on anxiety (SCARED), depression (CDI) and aggression (Externalizing Problems scale of YSR). A subgroup of adolescents with MBID and severe behavioral problems (MBID-SBP) was compared to a general subgroup (MBID-G). Results: Outcomes for adolescents with MBID-SBP were worse than for adolescents with MBID-G on most measures. BPNSFS-ID frustration was positively associated with mental health problems. Correlations for the BPNSFS-ID satisfaction scales were positive but weaker. Associations within the MBID-SBP subgroup were stronger than for the MBID-G subgroup. Discussion: Frustration of BPN in particular is associated with mental health problems. Attending basic psychological needs may potentially help to counter ill-being.

Internal validity and measurement invariance of the Counseling Center Assessment of Psychological Symptoms-62 item (CCAPS-62) was examined via confirmatory factor analytic models among autistic (n = 1,268) and non-autistic (n = 3,776) college students. Findings reviewed the CCAPS-62 had a strong model fit and was invariant across groups.

Objective: The increasing rate of depression among university students is a cause of great concern worldwide. With the recent growth in computer vision technology, eye movement features are proving beneficial in the assessment of depression owing to their non-invasiveness. Our objective was to determine the presence of depression through emotional elicitation by studying blink patterns in a student population. Method: The blink data of 50 university students (26 males, 24 females) from different regions of the country within the age group of 21-26 years were collected using an experimental setup. Results: Statistical tests on blink data revealed that blink rate changes with changes in emotion from joy to sadness or vice versa, irrespective of one's depression status. Another explanation is that the blink rates of the healthy and depressed groups differed significantly during sad emotional states. The tests also indicated a half-closed eye state as a possible symptom of depression. Conclusions: These findings suggest that the prevalence of mental health problems can be detected at an early stage by designing simple non-invasive procedures, such as blink pattern analysis driven by technology and expert advice, which will help prevent the further development of such illnesses.

Background: Psychology coursework may include opportunities to reduce mental illness stigma attitudes among college students. However, some strategies are known to backfire, and little is known about how these attitudes evolve during psychology coursework. Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine whether psychology students' mental illness stigma attitudes change over the course of a semester. Method: This research examined changes in mental illness stigma across four undergraduate psychology courses: "Introductory Psychology," "Abnormal Psychology," "Basic Helping Skills," and "Internship." Students (N = 400) completed two mental illness stigma measures at the beginning and end of the semester. Results: Regardless of course, students showed slightly decreased anxiety-related stigma regarding individuals with mental illness and lower social distancing attitudes toward individuals with schizophrenia, as well as increased perceptions of the treatability of mental illness, over the course of the semester. Conclusion: The findings suggest limited stigma reduction through the psychology curriculum. Teaching Implications: Greater emphasis on systematic efforts for stigma reduction across the psychology curriculum is warranted and instructors may want to consider developing gender-related stigma reduction methods.

The present study examined whether learning disabilities (LD) in reading and/or math (i.e., reading disability [RD], math disability [MD], and RD+MD) co-occur with other diagnoses. The data comprised a clinical sample (n = 430) with LD identified in childhood and a sample of matched controls (n = 2,140). Their medical diagnoses (according to the "International Classification of Diseases" nosology) until adulthood (20-39 years) were analyzed. The co-occurrence of LD with neurodevelopmental disorders was considered a homotypic comorbidity, and co-occurrence with disorders or diseases from the other diagnostic categories (i.e., mental and behavioral disorders, diseases of the nervous system, injuries, other medical or physical diagnoses) was considered a heterotypic comorbidity. Both homotypic and heterotypic comorbidity were more common in the LD group. Co-occurring neurodevelopmental disorders were the most prominent comorbid disorders, but mental and behavioral disorders, diseases of the nervous system, and injuries were also pronounced in the LD group. Accumulation of diagnoses across the diagnostic categories was more common in the LD group. No differences were found among the RD, MD, and RD+MD subgroups. The findings are relevant from the theoretical perspective, as well as for clinical and educational practice, as they provide understanding regarding individual distress and guiding for the planning of support.

This study used rich individual-level registry data covering the entire Norwegian population to identify students aged 17-21 who either failed a high-stakes exit exam or who received the lowest passing grade from 2006 to 2018. Propensity score matching on high-quality observed characteristics was utilized to allow meaningful comparisons (N = 18,052, 64% boys). Results showed a 21% increase in odds of receiving a psychological diagnosis among students who failed the exam. Adolescents were at 57% reduced odds of graduating and 44% reduction in odds of enrolling in tertiary education 5 years following the exam. Results suggest that failing a high-stakes exam is associated with mental health issues and therefore may impact adolescents more broadly than captured in educational outcomes.

Objective: To determine the demographic and clinical characteristics of children followed up with the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) at a tertiary center in Southeeast Turkey. Methods: Children followed up with the diagnosis of ASD at a university hospital child psychiatry clinic between June 2016 and June 2021 were evaluated retrospectively for comorbidities, intellectual functioning and age at diagnosis. Results: In the preschool group, females displayed significantly more frequent cognitive developmental delay. Median age at diagnosis was 36 months (IQR= 22) regardless of gender. Approximately three-fourth (73.7%) of the cases had at least one psychiatric comorbid disorder while 22.8% had at least one medical diagnosis. Psychiatric comorbidity was found to be associated with later diagnosis. Conclusion: Although the age at first diagnosis in this study is relatively earlier than the studies in the literature, most of the children with ASD are still diagnosed very late. Psychiatric comorbidities may lead to later diagnosis due to overshadowing. Training of educational and primary healthcare workers on symptoms of ASD may enable earlier diagnosis.

This study aims to contribute to the knowledge about lacking or contradictory effects of benzodiazepine on hyperaroused or aggressive behaviour in persons with intellectual disability (ID). We conducted a retrospective and natural case study in a person with mild ID and multiple adverse childhood experiences (ACE), using routine diary data consisting of 275 days including 113 consecutive days under benzodiazepine medication. The medication effects were documented as "calm/relaxed", "fretful/distressed" and "sleep/doze". Transitions between these were modelled using Markov chains. Differences in transitions were analysed using Chi-Square test for homogeneity. The results show a significantly reduced stability of mood and increased distressed behaviour under benzodiazepine. This is in line with reports about the effects of psychotropic medication in patients with ID and challenging behaviour. Besides other influences on unexpected medication effects, a possible dissociative identity disorder is discussed as an additional explanation.

Research has linked pre- and perinatal complications (PPCs) with increased risk for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, PPCs are also known risk factors for other mental health disorders. This study explored which PPCs are specific risk factors for ASD, as opposed to other forms of psychopathology, among a large sample of clinically-referred youth. Archival data were used from 1177 youth who were evaluated at a hospital-based autism clinic. Results from logistic regressions indicated that use of tobacco, alcohol, or drugs, or experiencing amniocentesis predicted inclusion in the non-ASD group, while physical difficulties with delivery predicted inclusion in the ASD group. Possible explanations and implications for these findings are discussed.

Youth are vulnerable to mental health challenges. Social media presents an opportunity to evaluate disinhibited mental health discourse and self-disclosure. The objective of this study was to explore reported experiences and information needs related to youth seeking support for mental health on the social media platform, Reddit.com. We searched two subreddits: r/mental health and r/teenagers on Reddit.com for posts made by youth (13-24 years) relating to mental health help-seeking behaviors and information needs. Posts were screened and relevant data were extracted, coded, and analyzed using thematic analysis. Thematic analysis of relevant posts yielded four themes: (1) navigating mental health issues, (2) disclosing to others, (3) barriers to seeking care, and (4) experiences seeking care. Youth may have a diverse range of mental health help-seeking-related information needs and may face several barriers throughout the process of seeking care.

Objective: Despite community colleges accounting for 34% of all undergraduate enrollment, research on substance-use patterns among community college students is limited. Community college students may engage in substance use differently than their 4-year university counterparts due to differences in psychosocial factors and decreased availability of mental health services. The current study aimed to elucidate risk factors underlying non-medical use of prescription simulants (NMUS) and nicotine use by community college students. Methods: A web-based survey was administered to 10 of 13 community colleges within a southeastern state's Board of Regents school system. The survey included questions related to NMUS, nicotine use, alcohol use, mental health diagnosis, and demographics. Results: Overall, 9% of the participants reported NMUS, and 24.6% used nicotine. Multivariate analysis of variance and ?[subscript 2] tests revealed group differences among individuals using only nicotine, only NMUS, both nicotine and NMUS, and neither nicotine nor NMUS. Post-hoc 2 × 2 ?[subscript 2] tests indicated that individuals using both nicotine and NMUS had higher incidence of mental health diagnoses, were more likely to live in urban areas, reported higher weekly alcohol consumption, and were more likely to be male as compared to individuals using neither substance. Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms were higher in individuals using only NMUS and both NMUS and nicotine as compared to those using only nicotine or neither substance. Conclusions: These findings provide insight into demographic and psychological variables associated with NMUS and nicotine use among community college students that could be benefitted by greater access to affordable mental health services.

The recent increase in school shootings has brought about an urgency to renew efforts to understand and reduce them. In this article, the Division for Emotional and Behavioral Health reviews what is known about school shootings, including data related to incidence and shooter profiles. In addition, we describe responses to shootings, accompanied by data on effectiveness, when available. We conclude with recommendations for practice and a call for increased and rigorous research designed to understand and prevent school shootings. One in three students suffers from at least one common mental disorder highlighting the high prevalence of health issues in higher education. At the same time, every third student drops out of university without achieving their degrees. Nevertheless, connections between health and students' dropout behavior have hardly been investigated. Grounding on value-expectation theory, this article argues that the students' health-related quality of life (HRQoL) alters the impact of their self-assessed success probability in graduating on their dropout intentions. To examine the research question, data from the LAST project, which surveyed a German undergraduate student population over a period of four semesters (N = 7,169), were used applying fixed effects regressions, and interaction effects. Analyses uncover that the students' mental health status is in fact linked to their intentions to drop out of university. Furthermore, an interaction effect of mental HRQoL and success probability could be confirmed. The findings suggest that universities should adopt better health promotion policies that bring together both individual health needs and higher education's interest in successful graduates.

Holistic and ecological approaches to mental health support have been identified by many as best-practice approaches for creating and sustaining well-being. Those who experience mental health challenges including, for example, Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), often struggle to find adequate, sustainable and ongoing care from clinical settings, and recent research shows that additional strategies such as peer support programs, arts approaches, and holistic school-based collaboration work effectively. More generally, the mainstream population continues to suffer from outdated, overly medicalised and frequently inaccurate notions of the experience of poor mental health and the effective support of those who suffer, and peer- and school-integrated approaches go some way toward better education about mental ill-health. This article uses a creative ecologies model (Harris, 2016) to help schools implement student- and family-led support programs for students experiencing mental health challenges in school settings.

The news of a 16-year old teenager hacking a 13-year old boy to death in a toilet unprovoked in a secondary school in Singapore shook the whole nation in July 2021. In this article, we analyze the institutionalizing responses to the growing sense of youth mental health crisis in Singapore, catalyzed by River Valley High School incident, as the subjectification of wellbeing. We argue, firstly, that the national schools have become the main site for the production of networked surveillance and internalization of wellbeing. We examine the inclusive production of subjects ­characterized by varying levels of wellbeing in a rehabilitative social ­system exercising authority and control. Secondly, we argue that a totalizing system of surveillance and internalization is emerging in a technocratic heterotopia. We conclude by discussing interdisciplinary and intersectional alternative approaches emerging from the heterotopic space of the school.

This article examines how "Off Centre," a play by Haresh Sharma about mental health in Singapore, first devised and produced by The Necessary Stage (TNS) in 1993, provides a valuable opportunity for audiences to encounter characters labeled "mad" or "off centre" (a colloquial term in Singapore for being mentally ill), who are often looked down upon and relegated to being "useless" in the highly efficient and success-driven urban context of Singapore. It considers how audiences are challenged to respond sensitively and dialogically through a questioning process that builds empathy for persons struggling with mental health. I argue that when "Off Centre" imbricates the audience in the inner worlds of the characters to dialogue with them, it generates a pedagogical process by creating a space where sensing, listening to and questioning what happens to these characters becomes a way of learning about their battles and beliefs.

Psychological problems are prevalent among adolescents, and previous studies have robustly demonstrated that individual and family factors play a role in the formation and maintenance of these problems. On the other hand, not all adolescents show the same characteristics in terms of these factors and can be categorized into different groups. Identifying this heterogeneity is also important in intervention for psychological problems. Thus, this study aimed to identify patterns of parental attitudes, basic psychological needs, self-regulation, and alexithymia, using latent class analysis (LCA), and investigated how different patterns of these individual and family factors are associated with psychological problems. Participants included a sample of 331 volunteer Turkish adolescents (140 male [42.3%], 191 female [57.7%]). LCA indicated a two-class solution fit the current data well and 65% of the participants were classified into the first latent class which was labeled as "positive individual and family context" (PIFC). The PIFC were found to have higher levels of parental sensitivity and autonomy support, need satisfaction and self-regulation, but lower levels of mother's psychological and behavioral control and father's behavioral control, need frustration, and alexithymia. The second latent class, labeled as "negative individual and family context" (NIFC), included 35% of the adolescents. Adolescents in NIFC had low levels of parental sensitivity, autonomy support, satisfaction of basic psychological needs, and self-regulation, but high levels of mother's psychological and behavioral control, father's behavioral control, frustration of basic psychological needs, and alexithymia. Moreover, after controlling gender and age, adolescents classified in the NIFC displayed significantly higher levels of psychological problems than those classified in the PIFC. These findings support the idea that individual and familial factors interact to affect adolescents' mental health and suggest that clinicians and helping professionals would benefit from including these factors in intervention processes.

Background: The emphasis of mental health services has changed to become more recovery focussed and is increasingly looking towards new roles such as peer support as a part of service provision (NHSE, 2019). However, services for people with learning disabilities and mental health difficulties have lagged behind with people with lived experience mainly involved in research and consultation to services rather than delivering interventions. Methods: This article is based on four workshops held as part of a patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE) consultation on a research study being developed to promote access to recovery colleges for people with learning disabilities. The workshops included three peer supporters with learning disabilities. In the article we describe our groups experiences and views on mental health, recovery and peer support. Findings: Our group discussed our views on mental health, what recovery means and the impact of peer support on us. We also discussed the skills people need to do peer support and the support they need from others to do these roles well. Conclusions: We thought that peer support for people with learning disabilities can challenge stigma and help people with difficult experiences such as low self esteem and loneliness. Staff supporting people with learning disabilities may benefit from more training to implement peer support. More research on the kinds of peer support that are on offer for people with learning disabilities is needed.

Background: Rates of mental health conditions are high among adults with learning disabilities relative to the general population, however research suggests mental health conditions may be missed or under-identified in this population group. This review considers factors associated with the identification of mental health conditions among adults with learning disabilities in primary care. Methods: A scoping review was conducted and reported in accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidance extension for scoping reviews (PRISMA-ScR) We searched electronic databases (Cinahl, PsychINfo and Medline) for articles published between the years 2000 and 2022. Data were extracted, tabulated and themes were identified. Findings: The searches identified 3262 articles and 34 met inclusion criteria and were included in the review. Six broad themes were identified including (i) mental health screening in primary care, (ii) education, training and awareness raising for primary care staff, (iii) increasing access to psychological therapies (IAPT) through improved mental health condition case recognition in primary care and IAPT practitioner confidence, (iv) health checks and continuity of care, (v) specialist support for primary care providers, and (vi) awareness raising among adults with learning disabilities. Conclusions: There should be efforts to increase availability in primary care of mental health screening measures suitable for people with learning disabilities. Training opportunities for providers across different sectors of health and social care pathways, on the mental health needs of people with a learning disability are also required. The findings can be used to guide the development of services, for adults with learning disabilities and symptoms of mental health conditions in primary care.

Peer support has been an undeveloped pathway for filling the service gap and to generate employment opportunities for autistic individuals. Peer supports have been deployed widely in mental health and among veterans and understanding the utility of this service modality among autistic individuals illuminates opportunities for research, policy, and practice. This study examined characteristics of participants in an autistic-delivered peer support program and reports on use of and satisfaction with the program. Half of autistic participants had a co-occurring mental health diagnosis. Participants reported multiple areas of unmet needs and participant satisfaction with the program was high (90%). The findings of this study point toward autistic-delivered peer support as a promising avenue for future development.

There has been a heightened awareness of an increased risk of suicidality among individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) due to high rates of suicidal ideation (SI) in this population (11-66%). The current study investigated the rate of parent-endorsed SI and associated clinical features in 48 youths with ASD (Age; M: 12.97 years, SD: 2.33). SI was endorsed in 18.75% of participants. Youth with SI exhibited significantly higher levels of affective problems, externalizing problems, feelings of humiliation and rejection, and symptoms related to perfectionism. Results indicate that co-occurring mental health problems are associated with suicidal ideation and provide relevant targets for psychotherapeutic intervention. This preliminary study in a modest sample suggests the value of further research in larger samples to replicate and generalize these findings.

Brain age, a measure of biological aging in the brain, has been linked to psychiatric illness, principally in adult populations. Components of socioeconomic status (SES) associate with differences in brain structure and psychiatric risk across the lifespan. This study aimed to investigate the influence of SES on brain aging in childhood and adolescence, a period of rapid neurodevelopment and peak onset for many psychiatric disorders. We reanalyzed data from the Healthy Brain Network to examine the influence of SES components (occupational prestige, public assistance enrollment, parent education, and household income-to-needs ratio [INR]) on relative brain age (RBA). Analyses included 470 youth (5-17 years; 61.3% men), self-identifying as White (55%), African American (15%), Hispanic (9%), or multiracial (17.2%). Household income was 3.95 ± 2.33 (mean ± SD) times the federal poverty threshold. RBA quantified differences between chronological age and brain age using covariation patterns of morphological features and total volumes. We also examined associations between RBA and psychiatric symptoms (Child Behavior Checklist [CBCL]). Models covaried for sex, scan location, and parent psychiatric diagnoses. In a linear regression, lower RBA is associated with lower parent occupational prestige (p = 0.01), lower public assistance enrollment (p = 0.03), and more parent psychiatric diagnoses (p = 0.01), but not parent education or INR. Lower parent occupational prestige (p = 0.02) and lower RBA (p = 0.04) are associated with higher CBCL anxious/depressed scores. Our findings underscore the importance of including SES components in developmental brain research. Delayed brain aging may represent a potential biological pathway from SES to psychiatric risk.

Using survey data from 6,242 first-year students with disabilities that completed the National Survey of Student Engagement and the academic advising topical module, the purpose of the current study was to explore the aspects of academic advising behaviors that mediated overall self-reported grades and student engagement. Findings indicate academic advising is positively related to grades and engagement among students with disabilities; however, some advising practices were more beneficial for students with certain disabilities than others.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), one in five adults living in the United States has a mental illness (2022). Despite the varying complexities and diagnoses associated with students who are navigating mental health issues, there are numerous approaches educators and professionals supporting adult learners can take to help students cope with mental health needs. The resources and accommodations presented in this article discuss best practices for students with mental health needs that are adapted using Hewitt's (2017) "Yes I Can: A Mental Health Guide for Adult Literacy Facilitators." The information in this article accounts for the most common student needs and ways for facilitators to incorporate best practices into their classrooms that can address various diverse learning requirements. Limited literacy has a large impact on the U.S. population; about half of adults lack sufficient literacy proficiency. However, not all populations are impacted equally, as there is a significant comorbidity between low literacy and mental illness. The authors have found that smartphones can offer mental health patients with low literacy numerous resources. They will highlight two examples in this article and describe how each can be beneficial to a patient's health. While these resources have great potential, the authors realize that not all patients are able to use their smartphones like this as they lack basic digital literacy. Discourse theory has always played a significant role in Michel Foucault's larger theoretical framework. His discourse theories integrate language, power, and knowledge as to achieve the 'truth,' though there is a debate whether they are inherently linked. This paper explores the longitudinal evolution of Foucault's discourse theory from the external and internal aspects. It examined the evolution of Foucault's discourse theory through different stages, closely focusing on the efforts that he gradually made to perfect his discourse theory. Adopting a qualitative research design, the study established how language, power, and knowledge constituted three fulcrums of Foucault's discourse theory as it evolved. The findings indicate that Foucault introduced a novel concept into discourse theory when he established the internal relationship between language, power and knowledge and with insanity and sexuality as external aspects. His theories of madness (insanity) and sexuality did not so intellectually trigger the masses, but he succeeded in linking insanity and sexuality with language, power and knowledge, which are the center of Foucault's discourse theory. This evolution of the discourse theory is the evidence of the transformation and development of discourse production, power production, and knowledge production, which helped Foucault to establish his discourse theory. The study implies that knowledge is the link between Foucault's discourse analysis and power analysis and that Foucault's discourse theory is the representation of his core discourse thoughts placed among discourse, knowledge, and power.

The primary purpose of this study is to design a model that examines the mediating role of moral identity in the effect of self-efficacy on stress, depression, and anxiety. For this purpose, the researcher applied three scales to 366 students enrolled in state universities on the Anatolian side of Istanbul. The data analysis used parametric tests, correlation tests, structural equation models, and Bayesian reliability analyses. Based on the results from the structural equation modeling analysis, the variable of moral identity was found to have a significant effect on the positive impact to selfefficacy on psychological problems. Therefore moral identity has been concluded to be able to help reduce the effects of stress, depression, and anxiety.
